Blocked Drains Pendle Hill

This is an older western-Sydney rail suburb with a strong Maltese heritage, marked out by the Maltese Monument standing in Civic Park.

The housing spread out fast once the local public school opened in 1955, filling the streets with post-war fibro and brick-veneer cottages through into the 1960s and 70s, when double-brick building became more common.

Underneath a lot of that original stock sits vitrified clay drainage, laid to the standard of its era but never built to last a century. Two very different ages of pipe sit within a short walk of each other here, and the fix looks different depending on which one a call turns out to be.

The rail line through the station has anchored the area since 1924, and a good number of the original owner-occupied cottages are still held by long-tenured families rather than renters or new buyers.

That kind of tenure is a double-edged fact underground. A well-kept property above ground doesn't always mean the original drainage has ever been touched.

The bigger factor is telling apart the older clay-and-roots side of the suburb from the newer unit stock near Stapleton Street, since the two go wrong underground for completely different reasons.

City of Parramatta has jurisdiction over this suburb too, so standards and approvals stay consistent either side of the boundary.
